Stay Safe While Driving this Texas Winter

Although Texas does not receive the multiple snowstorms producing several feet of snow during the winter months, the state can and does experience severe weather with the changing season. Stay safe this winter while driving on Texas roads by practicing good driving habits.

Winter weather makes driving conditions unpredictable and hazardous. If possible, restrict your travel during a winter storm. If you must hit the road, use extreme caution. Keep in mind that sleet or freezing rain can make the roads and sidewalks dangerous. You may also experience these driving risks during the winter: loss of pavement friction due to icy conditions; poor visibility brought on by fog, rain or spray from other vehicles; debris from standing water or strong winds; and road damage due to wash-outs and flooding.

Reduce your speed whenever any of the above conditions are present. The posted speed limits are only for ideal driving conditions and not winter weather. You could be ticketed even though you are driving the speed limit during a winter storm. Also keep your distance from other vehicles. The Texas Department of Transportation recommends staying three times the normal following distance whenever snow or ice is present.

Remain distant (at least 200 feet) from snow removal equipment as well. Be cautions when traveling over bridges, ramps and overpasses, as they tend to collect water and freeze. If your tires start to skid, ease off the gas or brakes. Steer with the slide until you feel traction once again and straighten your vehicle.
